It drives me crazy when the kids ignore me when I'm actually talking to them, but listen in when I'm having an adult conversation with my better half (sometimes butting in to ask questions!). I call this selective hearing and kids are experts in going to auto switch-off mode at a certain "lecture frequency" of their parent's voice. In this cartoon, the kids practice selective word hearing, another one of the many parent-management skills they learn along the way.
